Histamine Intolerance: When Your Body Has More Histamine Than It Can Handle

Histamine is something we usually associate with allergies—sneezing, itching, watery eyes, hives, and congestion. But histamine does much more than trigger an allergic response. It plays important roles in digestion, immune function, blood flow, and the nervous system.
The problem isn’t histamine itself. Your body needs it. Trouble can arise when histamine accumulates faster than your body can break it down, creating a collection of symptoms that may seem unrelated at first. This is commonly referred to as histamine intolerance or histamine sensitivity. For some people, the key to feeling better may not be simply avoiding histamine. It may be understanding why the body is having difficulty keeping histamine in balance.
What Is Histamine Intolerance?
Histamine is a naturally occurring compound produced by the body and found in a variety of foods. It helps coordinate immune responses, stimulates stomach acid production, influences the nervous system, and affects blood vessel dilation. Under normal circumstances, the body breaks down histamine efficiently. One of the important enzymes involved in this process is diamine oxidase (DAO), which helps break down histamine in the digestive tract.
When histamine enters the body faster than it can be metabolized—or when the body’s ability to break it down is impaired—histamine levels can rise. The result may be symptoms that resemble an allergic reaction even though a conventional food allergy isn’t necessarily the cause. Several factors may influence this balance, including gut health, inflammation, genetics, medications, alcohol consumption, nutrient status, and hormonal changes.
What Does Histamine Intolerance Feel Like?

The Gut-Histamine Connection

Because of this relationship, some women notice that symptoms become more pronounced at certain points in their menstrual cycle or during hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause.
This doesn’t mean that every hormone-related symptom is caused by histamine intolerance. But when digestive complaints, headaches, skin reactions, or allergy-like symptoms seem to fluctuate with hormonal changes, the connection may be worth exploring.
Could Food Be Triggering Your Symptoms?
Histamine is naturally present in many foods, and the amount can increase as foods age, ferment, or are processed. Common higher-histamine foods include aged cheeses, cured or smoked meats, fermented foods, alcohol, and certain fish. Other foods—including tomatoes, spinach, eggplant, avocado, citrus, chocolate, and some fruits—may also cause problems for some individuals, although food tolerance is highly individual.
A low-histamine diet can sometimes be useful as a short-term investigative tool. Rather than assuming that every food on a long “avoid” list is a permanent problem, a practitioner can help determine whether reducing histamine exposure actually changes your symptoms and then guide a thoughtful reintroduction process. The goal shouldn’t necessarily be to live on an increasingly restrictive diet. Ideally, it’s to understand what your body is responding to and why.
How Is Histamine Intolerance Evaluated?
There isn’t one definitive test that can diagnose histamine intolerance in every person. Evaluation generally involves looking at the whole picture—including symptoms, timing, dietary patterns, medical history, medications, hormone patterns, and gut health. Some practitioners may consider DAO or histamine testing, while an elimination-and-reintroduction approach can sometimes provide useful information. Allergy testing may also be appropriate when a true food allergy needs to be ruled out.
Because symptoms can overlap with many other conditions, it’s important not to assume that histamine intolerance is automatically the explanation. A broader evaluation can help distinguish histamine-related symptoms from allergies, digestive disorders, medication effects, hormonal changes, and other possible contributors.
Supporting Histamine Balance
Once potential triggers and contributing factors have been identified, there are several ways to support healthier histamine regulation. Nutrition is one piece. Depending on the individual, a temporary reduction in high-histamine foods may help calm symptoms while the underlying contributors are investigated.
Gut health is another important consideration. Supporting a healthy intestinal environment may help the body better manage histamine over time. Supplements such as DAO enzymes, vitamin C, quercetin, or selected probiotics may also be considered in some cases—but they aren’t appropriate for everyone, and more isn’t necessarily better.
Lifestyle matters, too. Stress and inadequate sleep can influence inflammatory and immune responses, so supporting the nervous system with regular sleep, stress management, movement, time outdoors, and restorative activities can be an important part of the bigger picture. Perhaps most importantly, don’t overlook medications and other factors that may be influencing your symptoms. Looking Beyond the Food List
Histamine intolerance can be frustrating because it often feels as though suddenly everything causes a reaction. But the answer isn’t necessarily an ever-growing list of foods you can’t eat.
A functional medicine approach looks at the individual and asks a broader set of questions: How is the digestive system functioning? Is there evidence of inflammation or dysbiosis? Are symptoms connected to hormonal changes? Are nutrient deficiencies or medications contributing? What happens when potential triggers are removed and then carefully reintroduced? Those questions can help shift the focus from simply avoiding histamine to understanding why your body may be struggling to maintain histamine balance in the first place.
