When most people think about vitamins that support bone health, calcium and vitamin D usually come to mind. Yet there’s another nutrient quietly working behind the scenes that deserves just as much attention. Vitamin K plays an essential role in directing where calcium belongs—helping strengthen bones while supporting healthy arteries and normal blood clotting.

Although vitamin K has long been associated with preventing excessive bleeding, researchers now recognize that its benefits extend far beyond clotting. From maintaining bone density to supporting cardiovascular health, this often-overlooked nutrient plays an important role in whole-body wellness.

Two Forms, Two Important Jobs

Vitamin K exists in two primary forms.

Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is found primarily in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard greens, and broccoli. Its best-known function is supporting the body’s normal blood clotting process.

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is found in fermented foods, certain animal products, and is also produced in small amounts by beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract. Vitamin K2 has gained significant attention for its role in bone metabolism and cardiovascular health.

While both forms contribute to overall health, they perform somewhat different functions throughout the body.

Why Vitamin K Is So Important

One of vitamin K’s most remarkable jobs is activating specialized proteins that bind calcium. Think of vitamin K as helping direct calcium traffic—encouraging it to become part of healthy bones while discouraging it from accumulating inside blood vessels. Without adequate vitamin K, calcium can’t be utilized as efficiently where it’s needed most. Vitamin K supports several critical processes:

  • Normal blood clotting after an injury
  • Healthy bone formation and maintenance
  • Proper utilization of calcium
  • Protection against unwanted calcium buildup in arteries
  • Healthy cellular function throughout the body

This makes vitamin K especially valuable as we age, when both osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease become more common.

Who May Be at Risk for Deficiency?

True vitamin K deficiency isn’t extremely common in healthy adults, but certain situations can increase the risk. People with digestive disorders such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or cystic fibrosis may have difficulty absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin K. Individuals following very restrictive diets or consistently avoiding vegetables may also consume inadequate amounts.

Certain medications can interfere with vitamin K as well. Blood-thinning medications like warfarin intentionally block vitamin K activity, while prolonged antibiotic use may reduce vitamin K-producing bacteria within the digestive tract. Some cholesterol-lowering medications and weight-loss drugs can also reduce absorption of fat-soluble nutrients. Because vitamin K is absorbed alongside dietary fats, extremely low-fat diets may unintentionally reduce absorption even when vitamin K-rich foods are consumed.

Signs That Vitamin K May Be Low

The most recognizable symptoms involve impaired blood clotting. These may include:

  • Easy bruising
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Blood in the urine or stool

However, mild deficiencies may not cause obvious symptoms. Over time, inadequate vitamin K may quietly contribute to reduced bone mineral density or diminished cardiovascular health. Healthcare providers generally diagnose vitamin K deficiency using blood clotting tests rather than measuring vitamin K directly.

Food First

For most people, improving dietary intake is the simplest place to begin. Excellent food sources include dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collards, and mustard greens. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables are also rich in vitamin K1. Vitamin K2 can be found in egg yolks, liver, certain cheeses, and fermented foods like natto, one of the richest natural sources available. Since vitamin K is fat-soluble, pairing these foods with healthy fats—such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, or seeds—helps improve absorption.

Vitamin K and Functional Medicine

From a functional medicine perspective, optimizing vitamin K isn’t simply about eating more vegetables. It’s also about creating an internal environment where nutrients can be properly absorbed and utilized. Digestive health plays an important role.
